VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT TO HELP IN ACTIVITIES FOR EARTH DAY

Local organizers for Utah's Earth Day Festival, coming April 24-26 to Valley Fair Mall, need volunteers to participate in a number of activities surrounding this year's theme "Ecology begins at home."

For instance, on Saturday, April 25, Earth Day Utah is sponsoring a cleanup of the Jordan River. Pre-registration is required and the deadline to do so is April 6.Mayor Deedee Corradini and Ken Alkema, director of the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, are scheduled to be guest speakers at the cleanup. For more information and registration forms, call 521-3906.

To celebrate Earth Day, April 22, the Salt Lake Valley Recycling Guide is looking for businesses and environmental entrepreneurs who want to be listed in the guide free of charge.

Businesses that sell items containing recycled components, use recycled material in production or sell something that makes recycling easier should contact Joyce Leach at 974-6902. The guide is scheduled for release in mid-April.

Moreover, the Recycling Information Office (RIO) has several volunteer speakers available who can talk on pertinent topics, such as recycling issues and shopping with waste reduction in mind. Anyone interested in booking a presentation or becoming a volunteer speaker should call RIO at 974-6902.
