N-SUB INVADES RUSSIAN WATERS, DEPARTS WITHOUT IDENTIFYING ITSELF

A foreign nuclear submarine spotted in Russia's northern territorial waters ignored repeated requests to surface and left without incident, a commonwealth navy spokesman said Thursday.

The unidentified submarine was observed Wednesday about six miles west of Kildin Island in the narrow Kolski Bay, northeast of Murmansk, said Valery Novikov, the navy spokesman. Two commonwealth destroyers and a plane monitored the submarine, which, after realizing it had been detected, headed quickly for international waters using the shortest possible route, Novikov said. "That means the submarine hadn't lost its way," he said.

On Feb. 11, a commonwealth and a U.S. submarine collided off the northern Russian coast, damaging the U.S. vessel and prompting Russia to formally protest to the United States.
