ORTON OPTS FOR HOT DOGS AND SLAW INSTEAD OF CAVIAR AT FUND-RAISER

Instead of a lavish fund-raising dinner with haute cuisine, Rep. Bill Orton, D-Utah, opted Tuesday for just hot dogs.

"It shows I'm frugal," Orton said Tuesday at his second-ever Washington fund-raiser, noting that is not a bad thing to show amid check-overdraft scandals."We had barbecue and chips at my first fund-raiser. It was good. I wanted to do it again. But I was told I should have some variety," he said.

So the menu at his reception Tuesday included the hot dogs, with a choice of catsup, mustard, relish and onions (thus making them "haute" dogs, maybe?), fried chicken wings, potato salad, cole slaw, watermelon - and a build-your-own ice cream sundae bar, the first that people attending could remember for any political fund-raiser.

In contrast, other receptions nearby in the Democratic Club offered caviar, shrimp, crab cakes, brie and free-flowing champagne to offer donors dropping off campaign checks.
