For the second time in a week, BYU's track and field team will return to Arizona to compete in a major invitational meet while many of the state's other collegiate athletes are competing in Logan.
The Cougars will compete against Arizona State, Texas Christian, Northern Arizona, Baylor, Oklahoma and Washington in the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe.In the meantime, Utah State will host the annual Mark Faldmo Invitational on Saturday. Besides USU, the meet will include Southern Utah, Utah, Idaho State, Ricks College and College of Southern Idaho.
After just one week of outdoor competition, the local college teams have produced several good marks. In last week's invitational in Tucson, BYU's Brent Patera threw the hammer 197-6 - six feet past the NCAA qualifying mark. Teammate Jim Waite leaped 24-111/2 in the long jump.
Utah State's Tim Price covered the 400-meter hurdles in 51.97; Adam Weston threw the javelin 217-7; and Troy Johnson clocked 47.85 in the 400-meter dash. Scott Hanes, who scaled a school record 16-7 indoors, cleared 16-2 in the pole vault.
