CHINESE ENVOY DEFECTS

First Secretary at the Chinese Embassy, Feng Bao Sheng, has defected to Britain and asked the British government to allow him and his wife to stay in the country, the Times reported Thursday.

The Home Office would only confirm that a Chinese national had asked to remain in Britain, but the Chinese Embassy issued a statement saying that Mrs. Feng left the embassy without notice on March 18.The Home Office said the request of the defector was being handled through regular channels by immigration officials.

The Chinese Embassy said Feng's request was linked to an extramarital affair and had nothing to do with politics.
