SMOOT WINS NATIONAL WRESTLING CROWN

Shandell Smoot, a former Viewmont Viking state wrestling champion, recently captured the National Junior College championship in the 167 pound weight class at Bismarck, N.D. to pace Ricks College to third place overall.

Smoot captured prep wrestling titles in both his junior and senior years, compiling a perfect 32-0 record his final year of high school.The Ricks wrestler defeated David Grieve, the No. 2-ranked wrestler in the nation, to first capture the regional title in Seattle. Smoot led Ricks to its first ever Regional Wrestling Championship.

At the national tournament, he pinned one opponent and outpointed three others, including defending national champion Steve Kelley from Iowa Central. Ricks finished third out of 63 teams.

Smoot also served as captain of the Ricks football team this past fall, helping them to a 9-2 record and gaining all-conference honors.
