Thanks to a slew of penalties that kept them short-handed, and a tough Gull defense that allowed Salt Lake only 22 shots on goal, the Golden Eagles were crushed by San Diego 6-1 in Saturday night's IHL action.
The Gulls drew blood early when San Diego's Derek Mayer scored from the left point on the power play at 3:52 of the opening session. Tomas Forslund quickly responded for the Eagles, scoring his tenth goal of the season to tie the game at one apiece. After that, it was all Gulls, who capitalized on 3-7 power play opportunities. Salt Lake, meanwhile, was only 1-2 on the power play.
Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles maintained a one-point edge on Indianapolis in the playoff chase, as the Ice dropped an afternoon match to Fort Wayne.
