Democrat Kyle Kopitke has been denied a waiver of the $971 fee for filing his U.S. Senate candidacy.
Kopitke contends he is penniless. Deputy Lt. Gov. Howard Rigtrup told Kopitke that he did not qualify because he has a job."I'm going to have to take out a $971 personal loan," Kopitke said Wednesday.
He said he earns under $20,000 a year from his job as a genealogist for the Mormon Church. So far, he has raised and spent about $400 on the campaign.
The filing fee "really smacks at participation by the common man," Kopitke said. "It illustrates how we have a government by the rich, for the rich and of the rich."
