SUU STICKS WITH EVANS AS ITS COACH

Bill Evans, the former Southern Utah University assistant who took over as interim coach near the end of the season when Neil Roberts resigned under pressure, was named the Thunderbird's head basketball coach today. The announcement was made at a noon meeting of the Thunderbird Athletic Club.

It is his first collegiate head-coaching experience. He was chosen from a field of more than 50 applicants, including Univeristy of Utah assistant Joe Cravens.Evans compiled a 5-2 record with the 20-8 Thunderbirds following Roberts' departure that came because of shoplifting charges against him in Idaho.

"Therre are several reasons we decided on bill," said SUU athletic director Jack Bishop. "First of all, it's good to see someone who has worked so hard get the opportunity, but we also feel he was far and away the best candidate for the job...

"He has the support of the players, and with the recruiting and program he has in place, we felt this way by far our best move," Bishop said.
