The Salt Lake Golden Eagles moved closer to clinching the final International Hockey League playoff berth by defeating the San Diego Gulls, 5-3, Monday night.
The Eagles improved their record to 32-39-8 and now have 72 points - three more than the Indianapolis Ice, which didn't play Monday.Rich Chernomaz scored a goal in the first period to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. The goal tied Chernomaz with Doug Palazzari for the franchise career goal record of 196. The other Eagle goals were scored by Shawn Heaphy, Dennis Holland, Darryl Olsen and Bryan Deasley.
The Eagles play Phoenix at the Delta Center Thursday, are at the Phoenix Roadrunners Friday and conclude the regular season Saturday at the Delta Center against Kansas City.
