Some 250 Wasatch High students staged a protest on the school lawn because the school board replaced football coach Ron Tree.
Students waved hand-painted signs and chanted "school board for sale" Tuesday to show support for Tree, who has been reassigned to other duties at the school. The students speculated Tree lost his coaching job because of his won-loss record - three wins and six losses last fall. He had been coach for eight years.
Wasatch Principal Brad Kendell characterized the board's decision as "a leadership issue. They wanted a change in the program."
Tree now teaches health, career education and driver education.
Tree said his lawyer has advised him not to discuss his reassignment, but he appreciated the student and community support.
Students, parents and others packed the school board chambers Friday, demanding that the board reverse the decision it made in early January to reassign Tree. The board refused.
