ALGERIAN COURT BANS ISLAMIC SALVATION FRONT

A court on Wednesday banned the fundamentalist Islamic Salvation Front, apparently completing attempts by the new military-backed government to dismantle Algeria's main opposition party.

The Front, legalized in 1989 when Algeria opened its one-party system to pluralism, has one week to appeal the administrative court ruling to Algeria's Supreme Court. The Front was banned at the request of the Interior Ministry, which had sought to dissolve the party since canceling Jan. 16 runoffs. The Front had been on the verge of controlling Parliament in Algeria's first multiparty legislative elections.
