GOP CANDIDATE GETS BUSH ENDORSEMENT

Second District congressional candidate Jim Bartleson, a Republican, recently returned from a Washington, D.C., trip where he met with officials of President Bush's administration and received a number of formal endorsements.

Bartleson said those endorsing his campaign include Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho; Rep. Christopher Cox, R-Calif.; Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas; Rep. John Doolittle, R-Calif.; Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif.; Dick Armey, R-Texas; and Rep. Jim Nussle, R-Iowa.Bartleson says he's also been endorsed by Paul Weyrich, head of the conservative Free Congress Foundation.

Bartleson is the former chairman of the National Center for Constitutional Studies (the old Freeman Institute).

In a letter endorsing Bartleson, Cox said: "Jim will make the kind of congressman we dream about. He understands the destructive nature of the Washington culture and will never become part of it. He has already taken the anti-tax pledge. In fact, on every issue I can think of, Jim will stand with conservatives and become one of our best champions."
