Herman Smith scored 30 points and Erin Cowan added 20 as Idaho State upset Weber State 88-82 Saturday night in a Big Sky Conference game marred by a bench-clearing brawl.
Both teams poured onto the floor with 7:52 left before intermission, stopping the game for 20 minutes. Officials ejected four players - Chris Baker and Chris Daniels from ISU, and Mike Sivulich and David Baldwin from Weber.ISU (9-20 overall, 6-10 in conference play) earned the sixth and final spot in the Big Sky's tournament next week in Missoula, Mont., and will again face the Wildcats (15-12, 10-6) in first-round action Thursday.
Al Hamilton led Weber State with 25 points. The Wildcats finished third in conference play.
ISU jumped to a 31-26 first half lead behind 13 points from Smith, and led 51-44 at intermission.
The Bengals went on a 17-9 run to open the second half with Smith scoring eight of those points, and ISU led 68-53 with 12 minutes to play. Weber could draw no closer than five points the rest of the way.
