SUPERMARKETS BOOM WITH SERVICES

America's first supermarket opened in 1930, and now there are 30,684 such markets nationwide with annual sales volume of $2 million or more.

According to Lancaster-based Market Metrics, which supplies information on stores, customers and product usage to food marketers, 5,876 stores now offer banking services, 44 percent of supermarkets sell lottery tickets, 32.6 percent rent videotapes and 2,167 stores have restaurants.Other services offered at supermarkets include film development at 16,957 stores, floral centers at 11,681 outlets, auto supplies at 10,601 stores, clothing at 1,320, greeting cards at 22,732 and books and magazines at 25,493 or 83 percent of supermarkets.
