The Nebraska Cornhuskers, winners of seven national gymnastics titles, led from the opening event and finished with 286.175 points to capture the West Regional meet on Saturday.
Stanford, Brigham Young and UCLA followed Nebraska in that order and also qualified for the NCAA championships April 23-25 at Lincoln, Neb.Oklahoma, the 1991 national champion, failed to qualify after finishing sixth, behind New Mexico.
Stanford, which posted a national-record score of 288.40 during a regular season meet at California, finished second with 285.275 points. Brigham Young, led by all-around champion Liang Jing-Wei, scored 283.600 and UCLA finished with 282.525 points.
Nebraska opened with a 48.05 score in the floor exercise and the Cornhuskers didn't score under 47.35 the rest of the night.
Nebraska, safely in front going into the final two events, had its lowest scores of the night in the last two routines, 47.52 on the parallel bars and 47.35 on the high bar.
The Cornhuskers set the record of 288.15 points in the 1988 championships.
All-American Dennis Harrison, one of five Nebraska sophomores, led the Cornhuskers with an individual total of 57.97 that included 9.80 scores in the rings and floor.
Liang won the all-around title with a score of 58.47. His high of the night was a 9.85 on the vault, where he did a back flip and handspring with a full layout.
Liang, a 23-year-old freshman, was more elated by BYU qualifying for the national meet than he was over his all-around victory.
"The important thing was for us to have a good team effort," he said. "I knew I could qualify individually, but I wanted the rest of my teammates to make it."
