Jose Angel Gutierrez, founder of La Raza Unida, a Mexican-American political party that in the 1970s won election of Hispanics to municipal and county offices in the Southwest, will be the keynote speaker at the 17th annual Chicano Scholarship Awards banquet on Thursday, April 30, in the University of Utah Olpin Union Ballroom.
Gutierrez will discuss the historical importance of the "Chicano" movement of the 1960s and '70s that opened many doors for Hispanics. The groups, organizations and academic programs that still bear the name "Chicano" in their titles represent the spirit of the Chicano movement.The Chicano Scholarship Fund was established by University of Utah students, faculty and community leaders to recognize approximately 10 of the outstanding Chicano and Hispanic students who have distinguished themselves through academic excellence and community involvement.
The University of Utah matches dollar for dollar all funds contributed to the Chicano Scholarship Endowment Fund.
