A fire department spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the fire wrecked the central exhibit area at the South Pacific Islands pavilion but did not harm adjoining concrete-block offices. There were no reports of injuries. The pavilion, completed just last week by a group of Fijian artists, was built primarily of tropical woods and grasses lashed together with vine cords. The cause of the fire, which was extinguished in an hour and a half, was not known.
