Rhode Island Project AIDS has mailed out nearly 5,000 letters apologizing for a personalized fund-raising campaign that shocked recipients because it said "you have AIDS."

Project AIDS Executive Director Anne Marie Silvia said the project received about 30 to 35 calls about the letter. She said three-quarters of the people strongly objected to the wording. The fund-raising letter began: "I'm sorry to tell you this, but your tests have come back. You have AIDS." It was a come-on, part of a mailing designed to build support for a May 31 AIDS walkathon.
