Family and friends have said goodbye to baby Theresa, whose nine-day life without a brain sparked nationwide debate about whether infants with her condition should be declared dead to allow donation of their organs.

About three dozen friends and family members gathered Thursday for a brief graveside service at the Hollywood Memorial Gardens to pay tribute to Theresa Ann Pearson, born March 21 with only a brainstem to keep her heart and lungs working. The infant lacked a skull or the upper portions of the brain. She died Monday at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where doctors had said she would live only a few days.
