As the mayor's departure looms, the City Council has agreed on how it will replace Jim Davis, who has held the office for 13 years.

Holly Carson, the council chairwoman, said that at a future meeting yet to be announced, each of seven council members will throw a name into the hat. By a public process-of-elimination vote, Davis' successor will be named. The winner will complete Davis' term, which runs through 1993.Davis announced earlier this year he will resign soon to head Salt Lake City's Housing and Economic Development Division. He said Thursday he would like to make the switch within a matter of days, but Carson said she expects Davis will stay aboard through the end of April in order to complete various unfinished business.

Carson said the job will most likely go to someone who is not on the council.
