Utah weather highlights
March 2-5: A potpourri of weather characterized the first few days of March, with a record-high temperature, 64, for March 2 at the Salt Lake Airport. Heavy rains, exacerbated by saturated soils and melting snow in the Pine Valley Mountains, caused some flooding in the Diamond Valley area of Washington County. Heavy snow fell in the southern Utah Mountains with Brian Head logging 21 inches and Bryce Canyon, 15. Water amounts were plentiful in the south: 1.63 inches at Hurricane and Leeds, 1.75.
March 6-9: Another storm brought some valley snowfall, mainly in southern Utah. Ferron had 4 inches; Milford, 5; and Salina Canyon, 8. Some precipitation amounts: Tenneco Mines in the Pine Valley Mountains, 1.83 inches; St. George, 1.02; and Milford, 1.03.
March 17-19: A storm mainly favored the western half of Utah with a taste of winter for the Irish ... a little white "blarney" on the four-leaf clovers . Lots of snow in the Cottonwood canyons; Alta, 22 inches; Solitude, 18; and Snowbird, 15. Water amounts: Centerville, 1.02 inches; Ogden bench, 0.96; Ogden, 0.83; and Hill Air Force Base, 0.80.
March 21-24: Another wet period, especially in the south and northern mountains. Brian Head and Elk Meadows had 14 inches, and Alta/Brighton, 10. Water amounts: Alta, 1.11, and Kanab, 1 inch. Two basements near Santa Clara, Washington County, were flooded by heavy rains.
March 26-29: More water for the south. LaVerkin received 1.05 inches; Hanksville, 0,87; Hurricane, 0.95; and Brian Head ski resort, 1.24 in 14 inches of snow.
Some March precipitation totals; Alta, 4.39 inches (54 percent or normal); Bullfrog, 0.99 (138 percent); Brigham City, 0.83 (43 percent); Heber City, 0.97 (76 percent); Holladay, 0.88 (34 percent); Provo-BYU, 1.39 (72 percent); Richfield, 1.90 (302 percent); and Zion National Park, 4.96 (279 percent).
