Pope John Paul II surprised farmer Paulo Temuen, his wife and eight children by joining them for a glass of lemonade in Mbanza Congo, Angola.

"Do you own land? Do you grow enough to feed everyone? Do your children go to school? Do you study hard?" the pope asked the Temuens in Portuguese during his 15-minute chat on Monday. Before leaving, the pope slipped Temuen an envelope, saying, "This is for all of you." It was a gift of $500. Temuen had to ask reporters what the green bills were.
