Logan officials are considering raising burial fees for the first time in 14 years, but cemetery manager Seth Sparks says interment there would still will be a bargain.

Sparks said the cost of burials at Logan City Cemetery far outpace the fees charged. He has proposed raising the cost of a cemetery space and perpetual care from $130 to $200 for Logan residents and $300 for non-residents.In the past, resident and non-resident fees have been the same. But the Logan Municipal Council recommended Thursday night an even higher non-resident fee of $400, arguing non-residents did not support city operations through taxes while living.

The proposed higher fees would still be comparable to other cities. Bountiful charges $310 and $465 for resident and non-resident spaces and perpetual care. Brigham City charges $250 and $385 for residents and non-residents, while Ogden assesses a flat rate of $300.

Sparks also proposed raising fees for grave openings and closings. The current rates are $150 during the week and $175 on Saturdays. His proposal calls for increasing resident fees to $175 during the week and $225 on Saturdays and holidays. Non-resident fees were recommended to increase to $300 and $350.

Council members asked Sparks to rework his proposed fees to include a percentage for cemetery improvements and additional land.
