A weekend Flag Day ceremony could be the last at the Ogden Elks Lodge, the likely target of a wrecking ball to make way for a new state courts building.
The building's sale is being negotiated with the state, said Edward E. Chadwick, exalted ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Ogden Lodge No. 719."It is just rumors right now. They're in the planning stages for the court building," he said before the ceremony on Sunday.
Chadwick said he was shocked to hear of the likely sale of the building because "it is one of the oldest and one of the historical buildings in Ogden. But I guess you can't stand in the way of progress."
Chadwick said Elks officials aren't looking for a new location yet because the existing building's fate has not been finally decided. A site selection committee has chosen the lodge grounds as home for the planned courts building.
Since 1908, the Elks have used the building and have observed Flag Day, said Chadwick.
