An official of the NAACP visiting Boise to collect money raised locally to aid riot-torn Los Angeles had high praise for the fund-raising effort.
Ernestine Peters, director of membership for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's western region said that the Boise chapter, which raised $4,000, was the first to make a contribution of this size. But Peters said she was not surprised by the Boise effort although the city's population is less than 0.5 percent black."There is a degree of brotherhood here in Boise that doesn't exist in other places," she said. "They could have easily said `This is their problem; they can deal with it.' "
The money was raised in conjunction with the First United Methodist Church where it was given to Peters on Saturday.
The fund-raiser was spearheaded by Bertha Edwards, president of the local NAACP chapter.
