Negotiations between homeowners and a developer have settled a dispute over a proposed 63-unit twin home development at the mouth of Barton Canyon in the foothills east of Bountiful.
The homeowners adjacent to the proposed Barton Woods subdivision withdrew their appeal of the city planning commission's approval, allowing the City Council Wednesday to approve the development's conditional use and planned unit development permits. The compromise negotiated between the homeowners and developer Lynda Hobson converts some of the planned-unit development's twin homes to single-family houses, eliminates a proposed recreational-vehicle storage area, and stipulates a minimum of 8-foot side yards on the units.
Units on the outer edge of the development - adjacent to surrounding single-family homes - also will be one-level, single-family homes under the agreement, which was spearheaded by Bountiful Mayor Robert Linnell.
The 16-acre development above Lakeview Drive initially spurred heated opposition from neighbors, including petitions, appeals and threats of legal action.
Bountiful Councilwoman Barbara Holt, who also serves on the planning commission, defended that body's approval of the project, saying the development meets all the standards and stipulations of the city's subdivision and PUD ordinances.
She also praised Linnell for his work in bringing the two sides together to negotiate, and the willingness of the two factions to compromise in reaching a settlement.
