Davis High's graduating of Class of 1992 was told to seize the moment, draw upon lessons learned and plan for a life full of joys during commencement exercises Wednesday night.
Davis High handed out 543 diplomas to graduates who heard from five students, chosen from auditions, to speak at the event held in the Dee Events Center. The Davis High a cappella choir also performed.Although the school had planned to eliminate the use of mortarboards during the commencement because of complaints from previous years and liability insurance concerns if the caps were thrown, graduates kept the tradition after parents and students complained.
Speaker Myq Larson told graduates about a friend who had dropped out of school and is now attending an alternative high school.
"He was faced with something that we all must face only he faced it a little earlier than most. It's this thing called reality. He discovered that his actions were directly linked to consequences that affected his entire life," Larson said.
Justin Hitt told classmates to assess and retain what they have learned. "The quality of knowledge that one possesses is often more important than the quality of knowledge," he said.
Kristina Tait told the graduates that planning is a key aspect of life. She said all people have a blueprint of life. It displays accomplishments, values, beliefs, feelings, experiences and goals. It shows past encounters, choices and challenges.
Chad Berbert said that high school is not merely a diploma but a collection of lessons learned from day to day.
"High school diplomas don't come in just one night. They arrive after living each day of a high school experience," he said.
Speaker Jennifer Hale said the only way to achieve success is through discipline and the right attitude.
"As you do this, everything will fall into place. Enthusiasm will be kindled, ideas will spring up, and knowledge will be accumulated," she said.
