Although they say success through unity is their goal, the Salt Lake County Democrats were anything but united at a meeting Thursday night at Kearns High School, 5525 S. 4800 West.

The party failed to adopt a platform at its county convention May 30. The party's executive committee said time constraints were the reason it wasn't adopted. A number of party members, particularly members of the gay and lesbian caucus, were unhappy with the way the platform issue was handled. The emergency meeting was supossed to quell those concerns and find answers "acceptable to a small but very vocal part of our party," according to a letter signed by all four members of the executive committee. The letter also warns that members should attend as "your county party is in very real danger of (being) taken over by a small group that is much more interested in attracting attention from the press at any cost, than it is in electing Democrats to office."

The party spent an hour adopting the agenda and another hour adopting a list of issues that included a pro-choice opinion and protection for all groups of people. Then the members outmotioned each other for about 20 minutes and finally adjourned in the middle of one member's motion.
