The Los Angeles Pension Commission will consider Police Chief Daryl Gates' retirement application sooner than planned, at the urging of city officials who worry Gates will change his mind.
The commission voted 4-1 Thursday to consider Gates' retirement next Thursday instead of on July 9 as originally planned. In papers filed this week, Gates said he would retire June 28, two days before a successor, former Philadelphia Police Commissioner Willie Williams, is sworn in.
But Gates could rescind his retirement any time before the commission approves it - leaving open the possibility the city could have two chiefs of police. So City Council members urged the commission to act on his application as soon as possible.
