Explorer Jacques Cousteau plans to broadcast a daily bulletin to the world on the world's environment.
"The aim is to tell the world of the state of the planet daily," said the 81-year-old oceanologist.Cousteau said mankind is endangering its own survival through rapid destruction of the environment, and it has become urgent to publicize the threat.
He plans to use a revolutionary ship, the Calypso II, to gather, process and deliver data on the environment by satellite to international organizations and news agencies from the most remote seas.
"Scientific reports are piling up, decisions are slow. The public wants to see and know," Cousteau told reporters.
The ship, packed with scientific equipment and named after the 50-year-old Calypso I, which launched the oceanologist to fame, will be the central piece in the "Systeme Cousteau" global environment information scheme.
But the ship and the scheme will see the light only if Cousteau manages to get donations for a large fund, free of any political or business influence, whose revenues will pay for the running costs.
He gave no figure for the amount needed.
