Salsa. It's hot; it's spicy - and you can dance to it when it's served up fresh by Damaris, a Columbian salsa band that will perform Monday at Utah State University.

Damaris will add more than a pinch of spice to the 1992 Fife Folklore Conference, "The Folklore of Food," which gets under way this week at USU. The band, featuring the Garcia Brothers, will play its Latin American rhythm and dance tunes Monday at 7 p.m. in the Ballroom in USU's Taggart Student Center. This free event, sponsored by the Folk Arts Program of the Utah Arts Council, is one of several open to the public.Internationally, acclaimed folklorist Alan Dundes will deliver the 1992 Fife Honors Lecture, "Folklore and Psychology," Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Eccles Conference Center Auditorium. Dundes' appearance is sponsored in part by the Utah Humanities Council. The public is invited to join conference participants at this free lecture, as well.

The annual Fife Folk Conference honors the late Austin and Alta Fife, Utahns who were commited throughout their lives to the study of folklore and folk culture. At this year's weeklong conference, folklorists from around the country will discuss the ways in which food and culture intersect.
