To the editor:

In the May 28 Readers' Forum, Ralph Henderson misunderstands the funding proposed for a light-rail system, or was it a typographical error? It is proposed to use one-quarter of 1 percent added sales tax to finance this needed system, not a one-quarter percent increase in our taxes. There may be some differences between this area and the big cities, but the problem remains; increasing pollution of our valley air and added overcrowding of the highways. Adding lanes to the freeway will only encourage more automobiles and worsening of air problems.

It may take a while to complete the light-rail system, with branches to the airport and to the far reaches of the south county, but anyone who values the ecology should support its beginning.
