Illinois ceramist Daniel Anderson will visit Utah State University to present a workshop titled "Ashen Beauty" from June 29 through July 3. It will run from Monday, June 29, through Friday, July 3, in the ceramics studio, Fine Arts Visual 123. Students will learn about clays, glazes, surface treatments and firing processes.
Anderson will give a free gallery talk and slide presentation Wednesday, July 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the NEH Museum of Art. A display of the ceramist's work can be viewed through July 6 in the museum's gallery.Anderson said, "The two most important aspects of the work in this exhibit are the shapes and the surfaces." He explained that following a stoneware or salt-glaze firing, he often sandblasts his work. As a result, the surfaces take on qualities of old metal, stone or concrete.
The museum's associate curator Rose Milovich said, "Anderson's interest in the effects that environmental elements have on a structure over time is evident in the way he manipulates the surfaces of his pots to suggest an aged quality. The patinas of textured earth tones, turquoise and rust really invite the sense of touch."
