Thanks to Friends of the Library, thousands of Salt Lake area schoolchildren can omit "no more books" from their traditional chant this summer.
The library organization gave away 12,000 books to 4,000 children in kindergarten through third grade during the past school year, according to Salt Lake City Library spokeswoman Colleen McLaughlin. At the final distribution of the year, children at the Guadalupe School, 340 S. Goshen, were invited to select free books from stacks of offerings without any help or advice from usually meddlesome adults. Afterward, each child was presented a name plate for his or her new book.
Six elementary schools are scheduled to participate in the program during the 1992-93 school year: Rose Park, Lincoln, Newman, Washington, Whittier and Mountain View.
