"The Tree" and "The Egg" are the latest additions to Scholastic-Cartwheel's "First Discovery" series of science and nature books for preschool children.

Each book contains four to eight brightly painted transparent pages that illustrate the subject matter ($10.95 each). Both were published in France by Editions Gallimard."The Tree" follows a chestnut tree through the seasons as it sprouts from its seed, blossoms, grows, sheds leaves and drops new chestnuts that will one day become trees.

The book describes different types of trees. It also tells readers how to recognize trees by their size and shape, the shape of their leaves and the look of their seeds.

"The Egg" follows a hen's egg from the moment it is laid to the time the chick hatches out. It also introduces various egg-laying farmyard fowl, egg-laying birds in the wild and egg-laying reptiles.
