Neighbors of this Utah National Guard camp will be hearing heavy artillery fire as an artillery unit conducts annual training exercises.
Starting Thursday, the 1st Battalion, 145th Field Artillery of Ogden will be firing 203mm howitzers night and day at the camp in the southwestern Salt Lake Valley, said Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Bob Nelson. In 1990, residents in Salt Lake, Utah and Davis counties complained to law enforcement because atmospheric conditions have often amplified the noise and concussion during the night, he said.
Camp spokesman Lt. Col. Paul Hough said similar disturbances are expected again this year because the 203mm millimeter gun is even bigger than the 155mm howitzer used last year.
The live-fire exercise is to conclude by June 25.
