Justin Call Stewart, 79, died Sunday, June 14, 1992, at his home in Salt Lake City.
Born September 23, 1912, Provo, Utah, to John Riggs and Esther Call Stewart. Moved with his family to Salt Lake City, 1920. Attended West High School and graduated from University of Utah, 1933. M.A., College Fellow, Teacher's College, Columbia, New York, 1935. Married Martha Ross, 1935, New York City.Supervisor of adult education Utah WPA, Salt Lake City, 1936-1940; supervisor, national field staff, consumer division, Office of Price Administration, Washington, D.C, 1940-41; information executive, O.P.A., District of Utah, 1941-42. Served from private to 2nd lieutenant, Signal Corps, World War II, 1943-46, and rationing officer, 1946-47.
Member of the Utah House of Representatives, 1949-50. Assistant general manager of the Utah Co-operative Association, Salt Lake City, 1947-59. Earned a Juris Doctor, University of Utah, 1960, and was admitted to Utah State Bar, 1960. Member, American Bar Association, Utah Bar Association and American Judicature Society.
Was president and trustee, First Unitarian Church, 1967-70. Founder and director, League of Utah Consumers, 1967-72. Director and president, Co-op Federal Credit Union, 1960-79. Director, Utah State Credit Union League, 1968-70. Served on Board of Directors, Co-op Service, 1959-80. Member of Board of Trustees, United National Assoc., 1973-75. Chairman, State of Utah UN Day Celebration, 1975. Founder and trustee, Utah Group Health Plan, later Fmnily Health Program (FHP), Salt Lake City, 1972-85.
Served as chairman of the Utah State Democratic Committee, 1976. Retired from private law practice in 1979, and served as volunteer lawyer for the Senior Law Center of the Utah Legal Services Corporation, Salt Lake City, 1979-83. Served as Speaker of the House in Utah Seniors Legislature, 1982-84. Founder and president of the nonpartisan Utah Seniors Political Action Committee. Received a Merit of Honor award, Emeritus Alumni Association, University of Utah, shortly before his death.
Survived by: His wife, Martha, Salt Lake City; son, Peter Ross Stewart, Seattle, Wash.; daughter, Polly Stewart, Salisbury, Maryland; daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Mike Dorrell, Salt Lake City; two sisters, Eleanor Olsen, Sundance; Ida Coppolino, Orem; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at noon Thursday, July 2, in the First Unitarian Church, 569 So. 1300 East. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to that church's building fund.
