Peter W. Philips has been named the 1992-93 Lowell Bennion Public Service Professor at the University of Utah.
Philips, an associate professor of economics, will develop a labor-market analysis useful to Utahns. He will direct U. students in a yearlong research and service project to inform labor-union members, high school students and other Utah workers of changing job prospects. Besides preparing a teachers module for high school students who will not attend college, Philips' team will make public presentations in rural Utah and create a radio commentary.
"Much Utah-focused information is developed for, and presented to, business and political leaders," said Philips, who doesn't believe Utah workers receive useful information about jobs and wages. "Little about current state and future trends in wages and jobs for Utahns ever trickles down to the workers themselves."
Meetings to explain the student findings will be held next year in Tooele, Price, St. George and at the state AFL-CIO convention in June.
