Homicide detectives are investigating a "suspicious death" of a baby who was delivered stillborn early Tuesday.
The baby was delivered at 12:23 a.m., but doctors indicated it had been dead for a day or two, said Salt Lake County deputy sheriff Jim Potter. They notified the sheriff's office after noticing bruises on the mother and other suspicious circumstances. The woman was taken to St. Marks Hospital by ambulance after complaining of abdominal pains and vaginal bleeding. "The female claimed she didn't know she was pregnant," Potter said.
But doctors questioned that assertion partly because the 26-year-old Millcreek woman already has three children.
Investigators are looking into the possibility that the woman was beaten or abused, which caused the unborn baby to die.
