The Michigan Supreme Court has struck down the nation's toughest drug law, ruling that a mandatory term of life in prison without parole for drug dealers is unconstitutionally harsh.

In its 4-3 opinion Tuesday, the high court said all those sentenced under the 1978 Michigan law would be eligible for parole after serving 10 years. It said that standard should be used in the future.About 160 people have been sentenced under the "drug lifer" law, which applied to possession of 650 grams or more of cocaine, about 23 ounces.
