GOP gubernatorial candidate Mike Stewart says fellow Republican candidates Richard Eyre and Mike Leavitt have been wooing him, both asking Stewart to be their lieutenant governor running mate.
Eyre admits he has talked to Stewart about being his No. 2. But Leavitt says Stewart's claims aren't exactly correct. In a press release Tuesday claiming growing support among GOP state delegates, Stewart says, "(Eyre's and Leavitt's) usual approach (in asking for Stewart's political hand) is to point to their polls that naturally show me trailing both of them. They then suggest I drop out and join one of them."
LaVarr Webb, Leavitt's campaign manager, says Leavitt has only asked Stewart if he is in the race to the end or whether he may be available to be considered as a lieutenant governor partner.
Webb says Leavitt intends to name a lieutenant governor running mate before the June 26-27 GOP state convention. So unless Stewart changes his mind and gets out of the race before the convention, he won't be considered, Webb says.
