Construction on a new human services building in Roosevelt will begin later this summer.

The City Council paved the way for construction of the two-story brick structure by approving a zone change on two acres just west of the Uintah Basin Applied Technology Center on Lagoon Street. Previously zoned as residential, the land has now been designated commercial-residential to allow construction of the 17,500-square-foot structure. No objections to the rezoning proposal were voiced during a recent public hearing.

The state awarded the bid for the new human services building to general contractor Bryson Garbett, Salt Lake City, after the original bid winner withdrew. Garbett told council members he chose the site because it "appeared to be a good area for the makings of an industrial park."

Garbett plans to begin construction in late July or early August. He said he will bid out some work to area contractors. Garbett will own the building but will lease it to the state under a 10-year contract.

He estimates construction will take four to five months. Garbett has already built a human services building in Tooele similar to the one he plans for Roosevelt. The building will house social services offices of family support, independent living, mental health and counseling, foster care and child protective services.
