The Sanpete County Commission has adopted an ordinance that will give law enforcement agencies more crowd-management authority regarding safety and sanitation in "mass gatherings."
The ordinance defines a "mass gathering" as an indoor or outdoor event with an anticipated attendance of 200 or more. It requires that the promoters or organizers of events this large obtain a permit from the sheriff's department. The permit must be obtained 15 days in advance of the activity, so the sheriff's department will have time to make sure that provisions for safety, sanitation and crowd control will be met.
The cost of a permit is $100, and an added $50 surcharge can be assessed if the 15-day requirement is not met.
The ordinance gives the sheriff's department authority to waive the fee in behalf of government agencies or tax exempt organizations such as churches.
