To the editor:

May I make a few random observations?1. The UtaHome Show was promoted as a collection of 10 "very affordable" homes. With base prices ranging from $100,000 to $150,000 or more (and the base price doesn't include the building lot), these homes may be less expensive and less elegant than the homes in the Parade of Homes Show, but they certainly don't fit my definition of "affordable."

2. Don't make police officers pay for taking their police cars home. As I recall, the city requested that the police officers begin taking their cars home a few years ago in an effort to increase their visibility in the area and thus deter crime. It doesn't make sense to ask the officers to take their cars home and then require them to pay for the privilege.

The additional risk to their homes and families by having a police car in the driveway is a high enough price. If this fee is adopted, the city stands to lose more in morale and goodwill than it will gain in additional revenue.

3. As the father of five boys, it was encouraging a few months ago to see the Boy Scouts of America reject the ultimatum given by the San Francisco Bay Area United Way by refusing to lower its standards, even though it meant a loss of United Way funding in that area. It's nice to know that there are still some organizations that don't consider their values to be negotiable.

4. At the conclusion of the Utah Centennial celebration in a few years, let's dump the "Ski Utah" license plates and make the "Delicate Arch" plates permanent.
