Dr. Kristen M. Ries and Holy Cross Sister Olivia Marie Hutcheson have received the 1992 Rose Garden Charity Care Award for their lifelong efforts in providing health care to the poor.
Ries has been recognized for her work as a physician specializing in infectious diseases. In 1988, Newsweek magazine called her an unsung hero for her work as an "acknowledged leader in the AIDS battle, but not for a scientific breakthrough. What Ries does, tirelessly, is help people cope."Hutcheson is prayer and spiritual director at St. Vincent de Paul Parish. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1953 and held nursing, supervisory and administrative responsibilities at several hospitals. The Holy Cross Hospital Rose Garden Party was Tuesday, with benefits going to the Charity Care Fund.
