A man who promised to lead Salt Lake police to a dead body Friday night has been charged with murder.

David Ralph Underdown, 43, was charged Tuesday in 3rd Circuit Court with criminal homicide, a first-degree felony.Police found the body of Robert Sutton, 40, in a transient camp east of 300 West on High Avenue (1470 South). Sutton had been bludgeoned to death with an ax. Court records say his assailant struck Sutton 18 times.

Underdown was arrested at the scene after he called police and asked them to meet him at a convenience store at 1300 S. Main.

Underdown's brother, Kenneth Underdown, told police Sutton had shouted threats at the two brothers and David Underdown had picked up the ax thinking he had to defend himself.
