Three golfers with Utah addresses and three golfers with ties to Utah will be among the 156 golfers teeing off Thursday when the 92nd annual U.S. Open gets under way at Pebble Beach.
Provo's Mike Reid goes off in the second group of the day at 8:10 a.m MST with Scott Hoch and Jay Haas, who is coming off a win last week at the St. Jude Classic in Memphis.Then in the group right behind Reid is Richard Zokol, the ex-BYU golfer, who won his first PGA victory earlier this year in Hattiesburg, Miss. Zokol, a former Utah Open winner, will be joined by Lance Ten Broeck and Bob Wolcott.
At 11:00 a.m. MST, St. George's Jay Don Blake tees off with another former NCAA champion, Billy Ray Brown, and D.A. Weibring.
In the group right behind Blake is Mitch Voges, the reigning U.S. Amateur champion, who played briefly for BYU in the late 1960s. Voges will play with defending U.S. Open champ Payne Stewart and British Open champion Ian Baker-Finch.
Ex-BYU golfer Rick Fehr tees off at 12:20 p.m. MST with Brad Faxon and Willie Wood, while Provo resident Dan Forsman, who tied for second in Memphis last week, goes off at 1:30 p.m. with Michael Harwood and Phil Blackmar.
For Friday's second round, players keep the same pairings, but get new tee times. For instance, Fehr will be in the first group of the day at 8:00, while Blake and Voges get late times at 3:20 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. respectively.
For Reid, this will be his 14th straight U.S. Open appearance and 15th overall. Blake has played in five Opens previously, while Forsman has played in four.
