Mark Messier, the former Edmonton Oilers center who led the New York Rangers to the NHL's best regular-season record, was named winner of the league's most valuable player award on Tuesday. It was the second time in three years that the Hart Trophy had gone to Messier, who won it in 1990 when he led Edmonton to the Stanley Cup title.
