The seven-week membership campaign of the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce came to a close Tuesday with the announcement that the $75,898 raised exceeded the $75,000 goal but the 222 new members fell short of the goal of 250 new members.
During a victory party in the Marriott Hotel, Wm. James Mortimer, publisher of the Deseret News and membership campaign chairman, said the campaign was a success because it made the chamber more visible, recruited new members and money, and the people involved had fun.The campaign was part of the chamber's 90th anniversary observance.
Winning round trips to Hawaii as the top producers with 18 new members each were Jim Gram-bihler of Mountain Fuel Supply and Clair Sorenson of First Security Bank.
In second place with 15 new members signed was Randy Evans of Industrial Supply; third place went to Kraig Murdock of First Security Bank with 12 new members recruited; in fourth place was Rod Chapman of First Security Bank with nine new members; and Terry Bailey signed eight new members for fifth place.
The top producing team came from First Security Bank with 43 new members signed. The highest producing division was the financial area with Harris Simmons, chief executive officer of Zions First National Bank, as the coach.The highest division over its goal was utilities with D.N. Rose, chief executive officer of Mountain Fuel Supply, as the coach.
The campaign was called the "Slam Dunk Challenge" and featured a basketball theme.
